Nick Hall, Chairman
Portchester Petanque Club was set up in 1988 and currently has over 80 members. The aim was to create a group to pursue the game of Pétanque.
We think we run a club open to anyone, with no restrictions and from my point of view a great social meeting point. All ages are welcome, including those with Mobility or Health limitations.
In addition throughout the Summer Months we run one hour sessions for 8 to 10 year olds each week with the same objective of encouraging more interest in the game. We are building a good group of people from all age groups who meet regularly on Tuesday evenings. A great opportunity for old and young to meet and learn to get on together.
There are virtually no restrictions as to who can play apart from occasional acute health problems which may need to be assessed on arrival.
We welcome visitors and guests to our regular playing sessions so why not come along and have a go.
Portchester has been running Hospitality Events for about 4 years now and on average we open our facilities to local businesses and organisations about four or five times a year and I have a band of about a dozen helpers who are always ready to respond whenever a new request comes along. The type of groups enjoying the hospitality sessions are the WI or Mixed activities as well as Manufacturers from Portsmouth, Fareham and the Dockyard. Some returning every year.
The latest group to use our facilities were the Portchester Branch of the WI. Their goup grew on the night from a suggested number of 15 to around 40. However we coped well with the format we devised:
The Ladies were formed into teams of Triples with one or two of our helpers allotted to each game. Other than Safety, it is not a good idea to enforce rules or techniques too strictly, as this can cause a loss of interest for some. After all, participants arrive with a view to enjoying a new activity, not to become experts!. We played for around an hour and a half and then were treated to typical WI Tea and Cakes.
On occasions we spot individuals who have a natural ability and we suggest that they come along to one of our meeting dates, (we have four sessions a week to choose from). On this particular event We were cordially thanked for our help.
